Samuel Hess, 63 year old teacher arrived in Baltimore on Oct 7, 1940 (first-class) on the SS Hakone, which departed Lisbon 21 Sept 1940. His last permanent residence was Fulda and his place of birth was Hintersteinau Hessen-Nassau. VISA issued with quota number 16013 in Stuttgart May 23, 1940. The index at Ancestry.com lists his “friend” (son) Siegried Hess traveling with him, but I could not find his name on the rather empty passenger list.
In the column indicating marriage status there is a typed M with a handwrtten W, indicating he was a widower.

155. lenlevine1, “lenlevine1 family tree,” https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/88950443/family, 4 Jul 2018.
This information was taken without verification from an Ancestry.com family tree posted by lenlevine1.
I came across this unverified tree in an Ancestry.com search for any additional information I might find about Benedict Hess, my ggf and namesake I found that Benedict and much of my own family research was pirated into this family tree. It appeared that this person took liberties and uploaded much of my infomation with his/hers. There was so much in this tree (3,878) that after several hours I can’t find how to get from any of my family to his/hers. So I began looking for unique names in his tree connecterd to people in my own and first found a previously unknown spouse, Nanchen Hess for my own Israel Schuster. I also found that lenlevine1 is on my ancestry.com DNA match list with aa predicted relationship of 5th-8th cousin,
Those people I decided to add to my Reunion database with the Reunion Source number of 959 have come from this unverified source. If I verify any of it I will include another source reference,

Dear Peter Dreifuss!
Thank you so much for sending all these wonderful photos of the Peter and Jeff Dreifuss collection, with all the information.
Sorry that I only come back to you know, but I haven’t been here for some days.
You should see me here looking intensively at these wonderful photos. I draw a family tree and tried to figure out who is who. It is so interesting to look at these impressive faces .
Your grandmother must have been very courageous to leave for America as an 18 year old girl.
This photo of her looks pretty much like being made in Germany, but I just compared it to a photo from 1908 from a lady same age and situation. I know that this photo was definitely taken in the US, so I am getting unshure.
Did your mother live in Fulda, when she went to the US or still in Hintersteinau?
Your great grandfather looks great with all these medals from the war 1870/71. I guess this one is taken in Fulda maybe around 1890, because he lived there. What do you think. He looks quite young compared to the family photo (taken before 1910)
The Hess family photo is a very strong one. Maybe it is taken in Fulda, maybe not , I will try to ask someone.
The “Karusell” – I don’t know the English word for the thing going around.
In the middle seems to be Rebekka “Rebekka seelig” at the back means dead by time of writing. .
She died in 1918 you said, from Influenza, That is the time then.
Left of her seems to be Minna Plaut (as written on the backside)
I think it is not a sister of Karoline, because she is Mina with one n only, and she has a different married name.
“Soldat” on the back, is only soldier. A brother you would name differently. The first word I can’t read at all.
Taken maybe around 1905, I guess maybe in Fulda, because they lived there.
Naphtali and Recha maybe taken in Frankfurt. She was born in Frankfurt.
The shoe shop is great. I asked somebody to get information about the address maybe we will find out.
Mentioning all the 12 kids of Benedict you have no dates for some of them, I looked them up, and found sad information
Naphtali *14.July.1875 in H. , lived in 1939 in Gelsenkirchen, deported with Recha on 27. January 1942 to Riga
Hirsch Heß , lived in Fulda 1939, deported from there on the 9. December 1941 to the Ghetto of Riga, dies April 1942 in salaspils
Mina fled to Holland was then after German occupation deported from Westerbork to extermination camp of Sobibor
Bernard lived in Fulda., later he seem to have moved to the north, deported to Zamosc, we have a transport from the region of Dortmund to there.
So sad, that means 5 children were murdered in the Holocaust.
The photo of Betty from Dormitz is nice, but not in the focus of Hesse, same Sara and daughter Betty, I guess it is taken in Dormitz too.
So I have six wonderful photos from your collection, which fit greatly in the project.
Thank you for your support.
Please say hello to your brother Jeff.
I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Greetings from Frankfurt to you!
Yours Monica Kingreen

Betreff: Re: Your photos from Schluechtern
Dear Monica,
These photos were scanned years ago and I submit them as they are. If you would like me to resize them to a smaller file size I can do this easily. Just let me know.
I am submitting them from the collection of Peter and Jeff Dreifuss (with the german spelling DREIFUSS). My brother, Jeff and I partner in genealogy.
The photos and the people in them are from the family of Benedict Hess, our great grandfather, who was born on 8 Dec 1846 in Hintersteinau Kries Schluctern, Germany. Benedict's Hebrew name was Baruch Shalom, which means blessed peace (I am named after him). He was a horse dealer, who fought for Germany in the Franco Prussian war (see photo with his medals). Benedict died in Fulda, Germany on 1 Mar 1925; he was 78.
On 26 Jun 1872 when Benedict (Baruch Shalom) was 25, he married Betty Neumark (born on 11 Apr 1845 in Vollmerz, Kr. Schluchtern, Germany), daughter of Hirsch Neumark, (30 Jul 1815-5 Nov 1877) & Minna Ottensosser, in Vollmerz. Betty died in Fulda Germany, on 18 Dec 1910; she was 65. She is buried in Fulda Germany Row3 Grave 32.
Benedict and Betty had 12 children. Benedict and his sons were in the German military. The family was very military like according to my grandmother Karolina. The family was organized around the men and the women were even expected to lace on the mens' boots.
Bendict and Betty had the following children:
2 i. Josef, (1873-1957)
3 ii. Samuel, (1876-1959)
4 iii. Sara, (1878-ca1941) Killed by the Nazis
5 iv. Bernhard, (1879-)
6 v. Jettchen, (1881-)
7 vi. Karolina, (1884-1963)
8 vii. Rebekka, (1886-1918)
9 viii. Mina, (1887-1943) Killed by the Nazis
10 ix. Hirsch, (1889-)
11 x. Heineman,
12 xi. Naftalie,
Photos:
Karolina hess.jpg Karolina was my grandmother who emigrated to New York as a young women in 1906. This photo was probably taken in New York but shows her in her native dress (sewn by her). She had very long red hair, which she wears braided on her head in this picture.
Benedict.jpg My great grandfather wearing his medals
Minna & Rebecca.jpg Two sisters of my grandmother's in a park somewhere (location unknown). The soldier with them looks to be their brother Naftali or perhaps another brother.
Back, Minna & Rebekka.jpg Original german writing on back in pencil with English in pen below.
Heinrichs Card.jpg Photo of my grandmother's sister Sara Hess Wild (killed by the Nazi's) with her daughter, Betty Wild.
BettyWildandBrothersDormitz.jpg Another picture of Sara's daughter Betty as a little girl with her brothers in Dormitz. Betty, married and escaped from Germany in 1939 to Brazil as a young woman.
PassportBettyWild3.jpg Part of Betty Wild's 1939 Passport out of Germany via Nuremburg.
Show House.jpg I believe this picture was taken in Frankfurt. It is a shoe store owned by my grandmother's brother Naftali Hess. Naftali's name can be seen printed on the large glass pane near the sign. Naftali and his family are likely those on the steps.
Naftali and Recha.jpg A photo of Naftali and his wife Recha
HESS PHOTO.jpg Photo of Benedict and Betty Hess (2nd and 3rd from left) and Josef and Rosali Hess (5th and 4th from left). Josef is the oldest brother of my grandmother. The location of the picture is unknown.
The location of many of the pictures are unknown. Any information you or your readers can provide me with would be most welcome. Please keep me abreast of how and where I can view the photos. I would be happy to give you any more information that I have.

I understand. I continually do research on the Eschenheimer family and have constructed quite a family tree. Johanna Eschenheimer Hess was my aunt. She was the sister of my father Rudolph Eschenheimer. So,I am always looking for details. Siegfried was a great guy and when I was younger we had great times together. He introduced me to baseball at Yankee Stadium in New York (along with his brother-in-law Alfred Lind who was married to Johanna's sister Greta). I still make a trip to NY to see a game each year and to drink some beer on 86th Street thinking of the fun we had.
So, if having the password helps me continue my research then please allow me to have one. If you think it will be of little or no value then that is OK also. My cousin Jason Hallgarten in Jerusalem and I have been working on this material for many years along with A. Frank. That was the reasons for my inquiry.

Jim Eschenheimer’s document says the following:
Johanna was born April 9, 1904. As a young woman she worked in a butcher’s shop in wiesbaden. Its Christian owner wanted to protect her against the Nazis and keeo her employed in his shop because of her qualified work. Hence he persuaded her to become baptized. Once she realized that this would not protect her from being persecuted, she and her husband Siegfried Hess of Kempten (Swabia) emigrated to the USA in 1937. The childless couple lived in the Bronx, NYC. Johanna turned nearly blind in old age and passed away September 1, 1999, aged 95, in Plantation, Fla.

Dear Pete,
Thank you for your e-mail.I have looked upon the wonderful web page about
the big family again. I wish I could do something like that about my fathers
family. I remember that your father told me that he had been in contact with
the Mormon congregation and through them got a lot of information.Could you
please tell me how I could get contact with them to ask about people who
lived in Germany- by air mail or by email?
About the family in Sweden I can tell you about things who have changed.

During the Shoah, Jews were murdered in a variety of ways, among them gassing, shooting, burning, drowning or burial alive, exhaustion through forced labor, starvation, epidemic diseases, deprivation of medical care and minimal hygienic conditions, and more. Some Jews took their own lives in order to escape arrest and further persecution, or to end their hopeless, relentless suffering.
