1923 birth year for Leon is suspect and Joseph’s data is more reliable. I decided to use data from The Central Database of Shoah Victims Names, which says ‘Leon Walter was born in Paris in 1931. 126. This information initially received by E-mail from Michael Tobias and came from LANDSMEN. Act 7 1866 Mendel (age 20), son of Abram and Jtka, married Chawa (age 18).
Also JRI-P lists Mendel CZARNOLASKI marrying Chana MIRMENSZTEJN 1866 Akt 7 film # 1199535
These records are now in JRI-P
127. Year of death comes from the knowledge that Chana Sarah returned to Grajewo from the US briefly when her father died. She met Isidore on that trip and married him and together they came to America. This could be 1905 as well, but 1906 was the year according to Eve Feldman's letter to me written12 May 1998 (right after Becky's Bat Mitzvah-10/5/98).She wrote further..."He died about 6 months before Min was born."
128. The name Chana MIRWENSZTERN is found on page 52 Landsmen Vol 5, number 4 1995 Spring Issue. Listed in this issue are Szczuczyn Births 1840-1849. Her birth is listed in the year 1844; Act 27; and the date given is "Jul3/15" ? I don't know what this means but many entries have a slash separating 2 numbers differeing by 12 days. Assuming this means birth date/name date ??
Her parents are listed as Joszk Dawidowicz and Leia Leybowna, both age 36.
I found listed in the same Landsmen article a Chawa MIRMELSZTEJN, born May 5, 1847 (under act 7). Parents were listed as Joszk Dawidowicz age 36 and Leia Leybkowna, age 30 (age 30 is likely to be incorrect if the marriage year is 1829 since Leia would have been only 12 at her wedding). I assume 30 is a transcription error from 36 and that Leja was the same age as Joszk and both born either in 1808 (from the 1844 birth of "Chana" above) or 1811 (from the 1847 birth of "Chawa"). I assume that Chana and Chawa are sisters.
Possible explanation of the date question above offered by Alan Radack, who wrote:"Pete, At first I didnt realize it but then I remembered that the Russians didnt change their calendar till very late (in the 19thcentury or early 20th )and looked it up and found that in the 1800s the correction from Julian to Gregorian was 12 days, in the 1900s 13 days. The 3/15 must mean that July 15 is equivalent to our calendar whilst July 3 was the old Julian calendar date. "
129. Letter from Eve Feldman written 12 May 1998. ..."died before April 3, 1908 when Eve was born"

132. Information from Alan Radack gives birthdate as 4 June 1870. Eve feldman gave me 1872. Gravestone says 1870

Ralph N Baer: The marriage was on the 19th of August (not 1 August). The groom was 27. His mother was an Adler. The bride's mother was an Ottensoser.
The word in the remarks which the previous poster omitted translates as registration official. (That is, the mayor had these duties.)

PAD Note: I found at http://germansynagogues.com/index.php/synagogues-a...p;sid=1363:windecken that Windecken, which is today part of the town of Nidderau, was an independent town with a Jewish community; the community may have been the oldest and largest in the dominion of the Count of Hanau.

Dear Peter,
I was checking on some dates for Lotte Mechner who has assembled more of
the Hess family tree. When I looked up Josef Hess on your web page I found
the death dates for Josef and Rosali (the parents of Meta Hess) reversed.
They should be Rosali Levi Hess b. 1-3-1874, d. 3-19-1951 and Josef b.
4-19-1873, d. 1-28-1957.
How are all of you, especially Ruth? We haven't heard from her in some
time. I'm sure your children and Jeffrey's are all busy - and most probably
in college. Drop us an update sometime.
Sincerely,
Ann & Fred Abeles
