667. “Emmendingen Archive Lazarus Bloch/The Emmendingen-Bern Theory to Eugenie’s Origins,” March - November, 2020.
Entered here as theory to explain the history of Eugnie’s origins.
Small summary cards were provided first as a preview from the records from the Emmendingen Archives by an assistant, Dorothea Scherle <dorothea.scherle@t-online.de. I believe this was early April 2020. The digitized records and Estate records of Lazarus Bloch were provided later in November by the Archivist, Ms Julanne Geike about 8 months later (delayed by the Pandemic) in November 2020. The November records consisted of:
1: Lazarus Bloch ID cards (PDF)
2: The Family of Lazarus Bloch (PDF)
3): The Estate Records of Lazarus Bloch 1830 Part 1 (PDF)
4): The Estate Records of Lazarus Bloch 1830 Part 2 (PDF)
Some of the records in the ID cards (1) and the Family Records (2) of Lazarus Bloch are not in full agreement So for now (November 24, 2020) I am including the more complete records that are listed in The Family of Lazarus Bloch (2).

She answered some questions a few days later:
Dear Mr Dreifuss,

The differences between the first attachment and the new one are related to new informations. The ID cards are more than 30 years old and there has been new recherche since then.
Most of all Dorothea Scherle provided a hole lot of new information for us that we are able to include in the new files.

For your questions:

1)    Yes there are conflicting sources for the age of the late Lazarus Bloch. I wasn’t able to resolve them, thats why we listed both
2)    Where exactly ist he typo? I could only find the 08.10.1785-date right now.
3)    Lazarus Bloch was born in Müllheim and died in Emmendingen, I included that on the page. Thank you for the hint.
4)    I don’t know the exact term for Schutzbürger in english. It might be „denizen“. All jewish inhabitants in Emmendingen got a certain amount of civil rights but were not equal to the citizens of Emmendingen. You might say, they have been considered as foreigners. They were allowed to own land and operate companies, there has been free exercise of religion, but they can’t be elected in certain offices. That’s why the jews in Emmendingen got their own „mayor“, the „Schulz“ (Judenschulz). As they have been protected as a part of the community in Emmendingen they had to pay a tax for this protection. The status of a Schutzbürger was common in many parts of Germany in the past centuries.

I have to admit that I was totally focused on the Bloch-Family and really don’t even consider to send you the information about the Weil-Family. You find it attached now. Sorry for the delay. I had to stop the listing at a certain point, because after a few generations every jewish person in Emmendingen is somehow related to the Weil families. If you are missing some connections please let me know the corresponding numbers and I will send them to you.

Jeffrey,
I well received your message.
Here are the connections I know with the Sommer from Sierentz.
The municipality seems the origin of the Sommer in Alsace. There is a
possibility the Sommer were called Levy prior 1808 (Bayonne's Napoleon
decree, to confirm all the patronyms in the French Empire). Many Jews have
changed or fixed their names at this occasion.
The Sommer I know start with Ludwig Sommer, born in Sierentz, february 4,
1824. He was stableman for Nathan Bloch, horse trader in Sierentz.
Ludwig married Marie Bloch, a daughter of Nathan. They migrated to Bern,
Switzerland.
They have had six daughters:
Rosalia Sommer, born in1852 likely in Sierentz. She married Adolphe Walch
from Hagenbach, Alsace. They are my grand-grand parents.
Henriette Sommer, born in Bern in 1856, married to Marx Marc Levy. They
have had a multiple descendance, mainly in Switzerland.
Adele Sommer, who married =E0 Mr. Weill, without known descendance.
Constance Sommer, likely remained single.
Helene Sommer, likely remained single
Eugenie Sommer, who married a Mr.Bloch.
That's all I know.

677. It is guessed that Samuel Levi might have been the husband of this Chana, who was the Annie who lived in Syracuse NY with her husband. Samuel Levi. We don't know this with any certainty or even that Chana imigrated to the US at all. We know that grandma, Chana Sora went to live in Syracuse NY at age 14 when she first came to the US to live with an uncle, Samuel Levi.
A contact of Jeff, Martin Miller in Syracuse, NY
(mailto:millerm@mailbox.syr.edu
web:http://web.syr.edu/~millerm/index.htm) found his records and that he was married to an Annie and had a daughter Rachael.
Grandma's first imigration is most surely July 23, 1900 when she arrived at Ellis Island from Rotterdam, Holland on the Rotterdam ship (see http://www.ellisisland.org/search/viewTextManifest...pID=604184060188&;) These records
show a 14y female, Chana Sora Charnelewsky from Grajewo, going to Syracuse NY to stay with an Uncle-something on Almond Street.
Uncle was found to be Samuel Levi who lived on 605 Almond Street (1848-1908- a tailor). He married Annie . They had a daughter Rachel Levi
Could Rachel Levi be Roselia- cousin of Joseph Feldman? Eve Feldman has told me that her father came to England and then the US following a cousin Roselia, who he was attracted to.
No one in the family today (August 2001) that I have spoken too except perhaps Aunt Frieda Schneider remembers anything about a Syracuse NY connection, including Eve Feldman, who at least wouldn't admit it if she had heard anything.

692. Ancestry.com messages and family tree from Karen Wiltshire,” 13 Jun 2021.
Message sent to me by Karen Wiltshire via Ancestry.com, thinking that I was Lee Tambeau (LT)

“Hi LT, i see we share the same Great Grandmother, Ada Florence Nineham. Your Grandfather William Albert ive only known as Bertie & have never been able to find much out about him only that he was born out of wedlock before marrying Willam Jacobs, i would love to know a bit more if your happy to share, as hes been our brickwall!!! Many thanks, regards Karen “

I used her family tree to go back on Albert’s family history and will add my own source references to verify.

697. 1916 Ship manifest found for a 27 year housewife, Ester from Grzebow, (the daughter of Jeremias who is also from Grzebow) with two of her children:
Chaja 5
Chana 3
Also present was her sister, Reisel, age 16.
The ship was the Nieuw Amsterdam, which departed Rotterdam and arrived in NY on April 4, 1916
Note that the record indicated that Ester had come previously to New York “1906/1908”
Moses Klode lived at 280 Stanton St, NY and the four went to live with him.

I located an earlier immigration, on 3 Jun 1905, 18 year old Ester Garfunkel, from Grembow to live with a brother-in-law L. Fischfeld at 82 Willet Street NY. Ship was the Rotterdam and the departure was from Rotterdam.
