The photo of the Kless family was taken 12 April 1936, correponding to Passover in the city of Sarny, then part of Poland. Today, Sarny is in Ukraine, and is known as Rivne Oblast or Rivnenshchyna The caption written on the back of the photo translated from Polish reads, “We, your parents and siblings, are sending the photograph of ourselves to you, our beloved Basia and Dawid, as an eternal remembrance. Sarny, 12.IV.1936.”

Sarny was captured by the Nazis in 1941 and was the site of a massacre of between 14,000-18,000 people mostly Jews from Sarny and surrounding towns on August 27-28, 1942. David and Yenta Kless were murdered at the massacre. They are seated at the far right of the photo. Young Louis Kless is fifth from the left with the cap in the photo. He would come to America as a displaced person in 1949 with his wife Molly and younger sister, Lena who was born in the
DP camp in 1945.
