Betreff: Who is Sannchen Hess née Grünebaum
Dear Horst,
Hello again Horst.
I have have attached a death certificate for Josef Hess (the Josef Hess that was born in Hintersteinau on 17 Jun 1848 and died in Fulda on 28 Nov 1918). It states that Josef was the son of Salomon Hess and Sannchen Hess née Grünebaum, but the only wives I know for Solomon Hess are Hanna Stern and possibly a Hanna Kahn. Could you help me determine the marriages of Salomon Hess in Hintersteinau: who were his wives, what were the dates of the weddings, and who were the children born from each wife.
I realize that this is a lot of work and I would be willing to pay you.
All the best,
Pete Dreifuss
Watertown, MA USA

Horst’s response (received 29 Sep 24)
Dear Peter,
I checked my documents. The entry "Grünebaum" is strange, but it could just be a misunderstanding. There is only Hannchen Stern as the second wife of Salomon Hess, both died in 1891, death entry attached. Salomon's first wife was Hannchen Kahn. I have attached Salomon's family list as far as I was able to update the data.
I just noticed that it's been another year since you visited, how time flies.
Best regards
Horst

Betreff: Interpretation of Document

Dear Rolf and Ute,
I’m curious about the origin of this document in my dad’s records. It looks to be a 1930 version of a certified copy of the birth certificate signed by the  elder member of the Hintersteinau synagogue, who was an Adler -last name only. I think it was a photocopy sent to my dad years later by his Aunt, Meta Hess Abeles. Meta like my dad was a family historian. What do you think?

Thank you both so much,
Pete

Note: Its very interesting that the Jewish Community of Hintersteinau in 1930 had its own stamp!

However, visit to Mount Carmel Cemetery on 5 April 1999 by Pete, Shelley and Becky Dreifuss found his birthdate to be 29 Oct 1850.
18. Data obtained by me on Sunday July 4 1999 on visit to Hanna Meyer-Moses' home. She obtained it from:

Stadtarchiv und Dokumentationsdienst
Erlacherhof, Junkerngasse 47
Postfach, 3000 Bern 8
Telefon 031 321 62 12

via letter dated 14 March 1995. This information was obtained via a request from LLD to Hanna. Hanna never sent it thinking it wrong as dates were not consistent with LLD. This letter in records.

Earlier data from LLD gave birthday as 29 Apr 1853 but Stadtarchiv data gives just 1849, so I assume she made herself younger than Leopold and actual month and day are 29 April.
Other data from Barry Finkel from census records. Rosa's Bday April 1875 from 1900 census. Dad D had it 1874. 1900 census lists Eugenia's native country as Switzerland, her father's country as Germany and her mother's country as Switzerland. It also lists Switzerland as the native country of the mother (Eugenia) of Isaac, Emma, etc. It gives the date of Eugenia's immigration as 1866 while Leopold's immigration was 1868.
The 1880 census lists Eugenia's native country as Baden as well as that of her parents. It also lists her as "Eugenie". In 1880 their address was 664 Broadway, Brooklyn NY Kings County

In July 1866, 7 children of Isaak DREIFUSS were still alive and had to be taken care of (age 5 – 26): Children out of 1st marriage of Isaak DREIFUSS with Sara SCHWEIZER († 17 Dec 1847):
Dusette [Dekla]: * 29 Apr 1839 [age 26] / ∞ 22 Apr 1868 in Baden-Baden
Abraham: * 16 May 1841 [age 25] / ∞ 15 Jun 1864 in Altdorf
- Sophie [Sofia]: * 10 Jun 1846 [age 20] / † 10 May 1871 [age 24]
Children out of 2nd marriage of Isaak DREIFUSS with Rosa BERNHEIMER († 16 Apr 1864):
Leopold: * 28 Oct 1850 [age 15] / to USA 1868 [arrival in New York on 28 Sep 1868]
- Emma: * 26 Dec 1852 [age 13] / to USA 1871
Aaron: * 22 May 1857 [age 9] / to USA 1874
Heinrich: * 29 Jan 1859 [age 7] / to USA 1875
- Rosa: * 05 Apr 1861 [age 5] / to USA 1880 or 1882

When Isaak DREIFUSS became a widower on 16 Apr 1864, his own parents and his mother-in-law were already dead. His father-in-law Salomon BERNHEIMER was a widower himself with children on his own – and he died shortly afterwards on 05 Jun 1864. So, neither his parents nor his parents- in-law could have taken care of Isaak DREIFUSS’ 7 children between June 1864 and July 1866 when guardians were assigned. According to the 1868 marriage record for his daughter Dusette, Isaak DREIFUSS was still alive and a merchant in Altdorf in April 1868 (provided that these information are correct). We know that Isaak DREIFUSS did not die in Altdorf because there is no such entry in the OSB Altdorf.

24 years / Altdorf / “Legitimate daughter of Isak DREIFUS, merchant, and Sara SCHWEIZER - Both residing in Altdorf.” The death was reported by a relative Isak GÜNDELFINGER. We know that Sara SCHWEIZER has died 1847 – Therefore the statement for Sophie’s parents “both residing In Altdorf” is not correct and therefore we can’t assume based on this record that Isaak DREIFUSS was still living in Altdorf in 1871. Also, it was not her father Isaak DREIFUSS who had reported Sophie’s death to the authorities…

Reply by Manfred Hennhöfer [Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe]

It becomes apparent that Isaak DREIFUSS was not in the position to provide well for his family because in April 1864 there was nothing left of his 2nd wife Rosa née BERNHEIMER’s dowry (see above) and apparently also very little of his 1st wife Sara SCHWEIZER’s dowry. Also, when Rosa née BERNHEIMER died on 16 Apr 1864, immediately two guardians were assigned for the minor children – Meaning that Isaak DREIFUSS as the father of these children was probably not considered to be fit to take care of the children after his wife’s death. It can be assumed that Isaak DREIFUSS has left Altdorf at some point – But his whereabouts later in life (and his place of death) remain unknown.
C. BLOCH – SOMMER family

Info in Lens book: Samuel BLOCH * 07 Jan 1807 in Emmendingen or Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin)

Tombstone for Eugenie DREIFUSS neé BLOCH † 29 Oct 1937 in New York, USA: * 29 Apr 1853 in Bern, Switzerland.
These are conflicting information in regard to Samuel BLOCH’s birth date to be either ca. 1804 or 1807 or ca. 1808! There were several BLOCH families in Emmendingen! See note from Julianne Geike at the Emmendingen town archive (Stadtarchiv Emmendingen) – See below

In order to verify Samuel BLOCH’s birth date / pace of birth, it is crucial to search for his birth record and for the 1837 marriage record for Samuel BLOCH and Jeanette SOMMER because in such a marriage record usually the names of the parents for both, the groom and the bride (and often the birth places / birth dates) are being stated. Possible 1837 wedding locations: Bern (Switzerland) / Emmendingen (Baden) / Sierentz (Haut-Rhin) / Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin). It is also crucial to search for the * 1849 (1853) record for the daughter Eugenie BLOCH, probably in Bern, Switzerland, in order to verify where / when she was born as the daughter of Samuel BLOCH & Jeanette SOMMER.

Information from the 1995 letter from the Stadtarchiv Bern [Bern City Archive]: Samuel BLOCH (called Wemser?), born 1808, from Emmendingen (Baden), horse trader, married 1837 to Jeanette SOMMER, born 1818, from Sivenz (= Sierenz / Sierentz) / Children: Ida BLOCH (* 20 Nov 1838 / † 08 Jan 1860 [??? difficult to decipher], Rosale BLOCH (* 1840), Leopold BLOCH (* 1843), Eduard BLOCH (* 29 Apr 1847) and Eugenie BLOCH (* 1849) / 1853 move to Thun, then return to Bern / Later expelled / Aug 1854 in Yverdon” [Sources: Alien residents index 1845 – 1850 / Register of Jews 1840 – 1854: Resident sheet of 25 Jan 1837, renewed on 11 Apr [???] 1853].

Action: Search Emmendingen, Baden, civil registry records (1811 – 1869) Result: No ∞ record found 1833 – 1842 in Emmendingen for BLOCH – SOMMER
No * records found 1837 – 1845 in Emmendingen for children of BLOCH – SOMMER
Record found in the 1841 birth records for the Emmendingen Jewish community about the attestation on 29 Nov 1841 in Bern for two children of Samuel BLOCH & Jeanette SOMMER: Ida BLOCH (* 20 Nov 1838 in Bern) / Rosalie BLOCH (* 27 Nov 1840 in Bern)
/ attested by the Bern state clerk Gottlieb Rud. Rufenacht and two members of the Jewish community Bern: Theodor Levi and Isaac Picard (or Picert – difficult to read). In late 1841, Samuel

BLOCH was a horse trader in Bern, Switzerland.
The 1841 entry in the Emmendingen birth Register is only an “attestation”, meaning these two children Ida BLOCH and Rosalie BLOCH were not born in Emmendingen – otherwise there would be actual individual birth entries. My [Ute-TGAC] interpretation is that Samuel BLOCH might have wanted to secure the so- called “right of residence” [Heimatrecht] in Emmendingen for both his daughters. Without any kind of social security / health care / pension system in the early / mid-1880s, the only “security” people had was this “right of residence” in a particular community which was acquired by birth (or marriage). The official proof to be entitled was the entry in the official birth (or marriage) records. According to the information provided by the Canton Bern State Archive (see below), Jews were not entitled for any kind of such a “right of residence” in Bern, Switzerland, at that time. I [Ute-TGAC] think that Samuel BLOCH wanted to make sure that his daughters got the “right of residence” in his home Emmendingen, Baden. The “Heimatrecht” included the community’s “Duty of Care” benefits for those residents who were poor and/or did not have a family to provide for them. Maybe it was a precaution in case the daughters did not get married? With this 1841 attestation entry in the Emmedingen vital records, Ida and Rosalie had acquired the “right of residence” in Emmendingen and this would have allowed them to move to and live in Emmendingen.
Without such a “right of residence”, a community had the right to refuse a settlement and to send “foreigners” away. There might have been another reason for this 1841 entry in the Emmendingen vital records – But this “Heimatrecht” situation could have been one.

Random finding: ∞ 26 Dec 1814 in Emmendingen: Elias BLOCH (age 29 / father: Lazer BLOCH / mother: Judith WEIL) and Eva SOMMER (age 18 / father: Moses Levi SOMMER / Mother: Rosina ULMANN) – Elias BLOCH (* ca. 1785) is an older brother of Samuel BLOCH.

Action: Contact Julianne Geike (Stadtarchiv) for Emmendingen vital records on 21Nov 2022 for Samuel BLOCH * 1807 / 1808 or * 1804 (vital records before 1811 are NOT online)
Result: The ca. 1804 birth year for Samuel BLOCH in the family sheet Mrs. Geike had sent to Mr. Dreifuss is an estimation based on alternative sources [NOT primary vital records] = Here an 1830 inheritance record for Lazarus BLOCH mentioning an adult son Samuel BLOCH (21 years or older). Mrs. Geike has stated now that she can’t reconstruct how a
“ca. 1804” birth year was calculated for Samuel BLOCH (son of Lazarus BLOCH)
. His brother Model was presumably born 1804 (no twin mentioned). The birth year of another brother Salomon was calculated “1807/1808” – Therefore: It is most likely that Samuel BLOCH was born ca. 1805 – 1807. In order to determine Samuel BLOCH’s correct birth date, we need either his Emmendigen birth record or the 1837 marriage record BLOCH / SOMMER.

You [Pete] have also contacted the Stadtarchiv Bern and received a reply from Mr. Camenzind – mostly verifying these information you had received in the 1995 letter – and confirming the reference to Yverdon, Switzerland, where the BLOCH family had moved to in 1854.

NEW information retrieved from the record copies which were not included in the 1995 letter:
The move of the BLOCH family to Yverdon in 1854 was reported to the Bern authorities by Eduard SOMMER / Legitimation certificate was sent to Eduard SOMMER on August 5th, 1854.
Possible action: Contact Mr. Camenzind [Stadtarchiv Bern] for a record for Eduard SOMMER in the same source: SAB_1278_0_2 Kontrolle über die Juden / SAB_1278_1_2 Fremden- Einwohnerregister Bern.
Places of residence for BLOCH family in Bern (Jewish Quarter): Apartments no. 82 (1837) / no. 122 (1849), no. 81 ??? (1850) and no. 22 (1853)
Possible action: Contact Mr. Camenzind [Stadtarchiv Bern] for maps of the Jewish Quarter in order to find out where these apartments were located back then.
On the bottom of the first page for the BLOCH family, there is a Judith BLOCH mentioned as a maid / servant [Magd / Dienstbote]. She was born 1830, came to Bern 1849 and went back to Emmendingen in 1850. She has lived in apartment no. 122 in Bern (Jewish quarter) together with Samuel BLOCH’s family. Based on “The Family of Lazarus BLOCH” sheet, Judith BLOCH (* 1830 in Emmendingen) was a niece of Samuel BLOCH as a daughter of his oldest brother Elias BLOCH (* ca. 1786) and Eva SOMMER (* ca. 1793). Judith BLOCH has then married Alexander WEIL (see their children * 1857 – 1865).

Until the second half of the 1800s, the Jewish people in Bern, Switzerland, were not at all coequal to other residents there. Also, the 1848 Swiss Federal Constitution [Bundesverfassung] excluded Jews from the then applied so-called “right of free movement” [Freizügikeit], meaning Jews were not allowed to freely choose their place of residence in Switzerland. Compared to other Cantons, Bern was one of the most
progressive Swiss cantons in regard to the equality of the Jewish population: “Already” in 1846, the Bern government granted Jews the right of settlement and freedom of trade. That was about one generation earlier than the rest of Switzerland! It was not before 1883 that a Synagoge was erected in Bern. Switzerland did not keep civil registry records before 1876. So: There are no civil registry vital records before 1876 in Bern, Switzerland. Dr. Barbara Studer assumes that Samuel BLOCH and Jeanette SOMMER did not get married in Bern about 1837 – There was no Jewish community in Bern and a civil marriage was not possible in Bern back then. Dr. Barbara Studer has checked the church records of Christian parishes in the city of Bern: There is no Christian marriage recorded for Samuel BLOCH and Jeanette SOMMER in the city of Bern, Switzerland.
Dr. Studer assumes that they got married in Lengnau or Endingen in the Aargau Canton, or that they got married at a place in the Alsace, France, or in Baden where they had rather large Jewish communities and Synagoges.
The only source for Jews in Bern in the early / mid-1800s are the “Control of the Jews”
[Kontrolle über die Juden] / records about registered Jews (see Stadtarchiv Bern above).

Based on online search in the respective local vital records we know: Samuel BLOCH and Jeanette
SOMMER did neither get married in Emmendingen (Baden) nor in Sierentz (Haut-Rhin) nor in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin) about 1837.
Based on the reply of the Bern State Archive, they probably also did not get married in Bern, Switzerland.
Jeanette SOMMER was not born about 1818 in Sierentz (Haut-Rhin)! I [Ute – TGAC] have not been able to establish the place of birth for Jeanette SOMMER without her 1837 marriage record. I [Ute- TGAC] assume that Jeanette SOMMER was not born in Sierentz but that she might have lived there before she moved to Bern, making Sierentz her previous place of residence – But it is not her place of birth. I [Ute] have double checked the Sierentz birth records 1808 – 1825: No Jeanette SOMMER!!!
It is impossible to find the birth record for Samuel BLOCH
who was most likely born in Emmendingen about 1807/1808. If vital records had been kept for Emmendingen before 1811, they don’t exist
anymore.

After writing to the Canton of Bern via their web site by mistake, I went to the City of Bern archives at https://www.bern.ch/en and confimed, clarified, learned more specific information, and obtained valuable documents.
This email was received on Apr 5, 2023 from Lukas.Camenzind@BERN.CH with 3 attachments:

Dear Mr. Dreifuss,

Mrs. Ute Mehlhorn sent us the confirmation of payment and I therefore conducted the research about Eugenie Bloch.

I found the two entries in the registers mentioned by Marianne Howald in her letter from 1995, however, I couldn’t find any more indications about the presence of the Bloch family in Bern. As the family left Bern in the 1850s and as there is no national register, you might have to contact the city archives of Yverdon and see if there are any records left from that time (https://www.yverdon-les-bains.ch/votre-commune/histoire-archives).

Here is a short summary of the two entries:
Samuel Bloch was from Emmendingen (Baden) and born in 1808. According to the record, he was also called “Xander” or “Zander”. His wife Jeannette Sommer, which he married in march 1837, was born in Sierenz (Alsace) in 1818. The register lists Samuel’s occupation as horse trader (Pferdhändler), while Jeannette is without profession (ohne Beruf). Their children Jdda/Ida (20.11.1838-8.1.1850), Rosalia/Rosalie (*1840), Léopold/Leopold (1843), Edouard/Eduard (deceased 29.4.1847) and Eugenia (1849) were schoolchildren (schulbesuchend).

The family arrived in Bern in January 1837, moved to Thun in 1853, returned to Berne shortly after but was sent away. The family then went to Yverdon.

The rest of their story is mentioned in the column to the right (transcribed and translated below):

Zieht mit Familie nach Thun N.B. zur Umänderung der L.P. extrah[iert] den 19.t Juli 1853
Wieder eingezogen. Ehemann Güterabtretung A.N.o 17t 1854

U[nd] leg. Sch. an Ed[uard] Sommer den 5. Aug[ust] 1854.

Moved to Thun with family, residence permit extracted [and sent] to police for modification on July 19th 1853
Moved back [to Bern], assignment of goods 1854.
The whole family sent away
[The family] resides in Yverdon according to Eduard Sommer, residence permit sent to police.
Legitimation certificate sent to Eduard Sommer on August 5th 1854.

Annexed, you will find the two extracts from SAB_1278_0_2 (Kontrolle über die Juden) and SAB_1278_1_2 (Fremden-Einwohnerregister).

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any more questions.

29. A Rosalie Bloch of about the correct age imigrated to the US on March 7, 1865. She was from France. I found the actual records online and they say no more than the following:
Name:   Rosalie Bloch
Arrival Date:   07 Mar 1865
Age:   24
Gender:   Female
Port of Departure:   Le Havre, France
Destination:   United States of America
Place of Origin:   France
Ship Name:   Harpswell
Port of Arrival:   New York
Line:   5
Microfilm Roll:   249
List Number:   129
There were no other Blochs.
Unprovable assumption is that Eugenie Bloch was a stowaway on this ship. This is the family story told to me by dad’s cousin, Buddy from Texas a few years before he passed away. Buddy was still working at the time and as sharp as ever but perhaps he liked to spin a tale. Buddy said, her records will never be found since they don’t exist (see ref. source 330). He also said Leopold Bloch never came over.
30. Her death certificate lists her as being in US for 72 years at her death. Prior to observing this, LLD's records listed 1866.
31. According to familysearch.com (Mormon Church Records Web Site), Leopold ‘Dryfuss’, son of Isaac ‘Dryfuss’ and Rosa ‘Meyer’ married Eugenie ‘Block’ on 21 JUL 1873 in Manhatten, New York. Batch #M010372 (film records). The year 1873 is borne out by 1900 census records showing them married for 27 years.
Before this information was available, I had found a handwritten note from Joe Dreifuss who wrote "Father & Mother married 1871 - at xxx Bushwickyyy (xxx is 248 crossed out. yyy is several numbers written down and crossed over). But no records were ever found in Brooklyn to support this. Most likely Joe did not know for sure,
32. WESTPHALIA
The "Westphalia" of 1872 was built in 1868 by Caird & Co, Greenock for Hamburg America Line. She was a 3,158 gross ton ship, length 339.9ft x beam 40ft, one funnel, two masts, iron construction, single screw and a speed of 12 knots. There was accommodation for 90-1st, 130-2nd and 520-3rd class passengers. Launched on 24/6/1868, she sailed from Hamburg on her maiden voyage to Southampton and New York on 16/9/1868. She commenced her last voyage from Hamburg to Havre and New York on 28/4/1875 before being laid up. In 1878 she was rebuilt with two funnels and compound engines, and on 30/7/1879 she resumed the Hamburg - Havre - New York service. She started her last voyage to New York on 19/12/1886 and in 1887 was sold to the British company, H.F.Swan of Newcastle who re-engined her and renamed her "Atlantica". In 1888 she went to Gazzo & Schiafino of Italy and was renamed "Provincia di Sao Paulo". In 1890 she was resold to La Veloce of Italy and was renamed "Mentana" (Haws says "Montana") and was further renamed "Sud America" later in 1890. She was finally scrapped in Genoa in 1901. Please note Pete, some of these records are confidential - the records
beyond 1886 from Lomza for example. Contact me for more details.

>Maybe Herszk and/or Fejga were siblings of Itka-although Herszk and Fejga were
>from diferent towns. (Mike- I've not found anthing more on this)
>
>They had the following children:
>

This is where Josel, son of Herszk makes sense, as I know of the
following Lomza births:

> 2 i. Chaim Schneider
SZNAJDER Chaim 1884 B 412 son of Juszk Herszkowicz (ie Juszk son of
Herszk)
> 3 ii. Dora Schneider
> 4 iii. Eli Schneider
could this be Enoch?

SZNAJDER Enoch 1871 B 165 son of Juszk Herszkowicz

> 5 iv. Esther Schneider

I know of Lomza birth: SZNAJDER Estera Rywka 1888 B 360 daughter of
Joszk.

> 6 v. Sam Schneider
could this be szluma?
SZNAJDER Szluma 1884 B 411 son of Juszk Herszkowicz

> 7 vi. Isidor Schneider
SZNEJDER Ick Bendet 1877 B 80 son of Juszk Herszkowicz Ostrolenka

and could Joszk/Josel have possibly had a child just before he died???:

Lomza:

SZNAJDER Dwejra 1910 B 152 daughter of Josel
(could this be a late registration of Dora? - some births were
registered over 10 years late, sometimes just prior to the child getting
married! - they had to prove when they were born.)

WAAAAAAAA! Joszk perhaps did not marry Itka BASZKA at all!

Lomza:

SZNEJDER Juszk 1874 M 35 Piontnica
LEWITA Itka 1874 M 35 Piontnica

He married Itka LEWITA !!!!!

What is your source for the BASZKA / BASKER name? Baszka is also a
FIRST NAME. I wonder if Itka LEWITA was actually Itka Baszka LEWITA, or
perhaps Itka was a widow (as Juszk was a widower) and LEWITA / BASZKA
were her TWO surnames (one a maidenname, one a first married name - but
in which order?).

I think LEWITA was her maiden name:

Lomza:
LEWITA Itka 1854 B 3 daughter of Jdzk Szlumowicz Piontnica
(see reference note 199 -Itka/Ida's death certificate notes her birth as 1853)
Perhaps she may married a BASZKA first, or perhaps Baszka was a
givenname..............

Pete,

I have all the pre 1886 Lomza records on loan here - I'll check them on
Thursday when I visit the LDS...........

An 1874 marriage means Enoch was born from Josel's first marriage as
was:

SZNAJDER Guta 1865 B 490 Joszk Herszkowicz

who died the next year:

SZNAJDER Gutka 1866 D 125

and you know of:

SZNEJDER Joszk 1862 M 40 Ostrolenka (Openchowo)
WSTENGA Sora 1862 M 40 Ostrolenka (Openchowo)

Have you have a copy of this record?

40. Holocaust Memorial Museum has Yitzkors on Grajewo and Lomza. The Yitzkor on Grajewo said that at beginning of Nazi regime, Grajewo was a community of 10,000 people, most of which were jewish. (However, "Where Once We Walked" lists the jewish population of the Shtetl, Grajewo, as 2,834. Most of the numbersfrom WOWW were derived from the "Black Book of Localities Whose Jewish Population Was Exterminated by the Nazis", published by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Many of the Black Book figures were based on the 1921 Poland Census which were revised upward to reflect the fact that many jews had not yet returned to the former home after the concluion of WWI.)
In 1795 Grajewo had became part of Czarist Russia when the railroad was strengthened in the town. Therefore many jews there who were in business travelled throughout Europe. Others that could not, were not isolated and Grajewo, until 1914 (WW I), had an economic atmosphere that was quite good for the jews there.
The book was published by the United Grayever Relief Committee, Irving Shapirstein, Sec'y,1655 Monroe Ave, Bronx, NY

About the ship S.S. Mongolia-
RIMUTAKA (3) was a 16,576 gross ton ship, built by Armstrong Whitworth, Newcastle in 1923 as the "Mongolia" for the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Nav. Co (P&O Line). This was a twin screw, 16 knot steamer, one funnel, two masts, with accommodation for 840-tourist class passengers. Becoming surplus to P&O's requirements, she transferred under long term charter to NZSCo in 1938, was renamed "Rimutaka" and started London - Panama - Auckland - Wellington sailings on 8/12/1938. Her last sailing on this route commenced 11/10/1949 and in February 1950 she was sold to Cia de Nav.Ingres, Panama and renamed "Europa". Transferred to Liberian registry in 1952 and renamed "Nassau" and in 1961 was sold to Nav.Turisticana Mexicana, Mexico, renamed "Acapulco" and used as a cruise ship. She was eventually scrapped in Japan in 1964. [North Star to Southern Cross by John M.Maber] - [Posted to The ShipsList by Ted Finch - 2 June 1998]
