Sara’s email thread with me:
Peter,
I saw my 97 yo mother yesterday and meant to ask her who sent her the papers on the Cole genealogy.  Unfortunately, it completely slipped my mind but I'm not entirely sure she would remember in any case.  I had thought that it would have been my father's cousin, Lewis Cole (his father was also named Lewis Cole and was my grandmother Florence's brother).  My parents were quite friendly with Lewis Cole and his parents Lewis and Minna and I always understood that it was one of the Coles who had decided to change their name from Cohn to Cole.  HOWEVER, today I looked in some records that I have and found a letter from my grandfather Nugent (Florence's husband) from the late 70s - I can date it to then because my grandfather references my grandmother not being well and she died in 1979.  It references the "IBM printout of the Cohn (Cole) family" and states that it was Hermione Baer (my grandmother Florence's sister) who put it together and sent it to my parents.  So I was wrong about the origins of it.  I believe the Lewis Cole family and Hermione and her husband Milton (they never had children) lived in Louisville.  I'm quite sure my parents visited them there and made a visit to the Bernheim Forest as well.
One other thing of interest in my grandfather's letter was that he mentioned that my great-grandmother's husband, Samuel Cohn, was originally named Samuel Kempe but that he had changed Kempe to Cohn when he first came to the US from Germany.
I mailed off the package Monday.
Best,
Sara

My wife and I and 2 daughters’ families (10 of us altogether) met up a month ago with other relatives we have from the Schmieheim area in Narragansett. My closest of the family along with her husband were professors at Brown University in Providence. Somehow it's a small world.
Do you know the name of who sent the records to your mom? I may know them or have known them since my father and I had studied about Rabbi Bernhard Dreyfuss and Rose Hirsch years ago.
All the best,
Peter

Please let me know if you discover anything interesting from them!
For some reason I thought you lived in New Jersey so I was very surprised to learn that you live in Massachusetts.  I live just down the road in Providence.  If you ever come down this way, it would be fun to meet up.  In any case, I will be in touch with you again when I seriously start planning my trip to Schmieheim as I am sure I will have some questions for you.

Dear Pete,

Despite the extremely long delay in my response to your email, I was extremely excited to receive it and to learn a little about the connections between our families.  We seem to have at least three family names in common (Weil, Dreyfuss/Dreifuss, and Bernheim).

I have not formalized my plans to visit Schmieheim yet but will do so once I have settled permanently in France, a process that has been in the works for a while.  Once I am ensconced , it will be pretty easy to plan a visit.  I also have a cousin who is interested in making the visit with me so it will be a bit of a family affair.

I am currently going through my mother's papers and found a very old computer print-out of what she labelled the "Cole genealogy".  My great-grandmother Sara Cohn had five children with Samuel Kempe Cohn.  One of them, Lewis, my grand-uncle, changed his name to Cole to anglicize it.  I have about 50-60 pages of genealogy starting with Rabbi Bernard Dreyfuss and Rose Hirsth.  I wonder if you would be interested in it?  I would be happy to send it to you.  You can take a look at it and recycle it if there is nothing of interest.  My children are not in the least interested and I am getting down to the bare bones before I move.  If you are interested, please send me your address.

Best regards,
Sara

Hi Sara,

Thanks for writing; that was a pretty good shot in the dark.

Abraham, my GGG grandfather married in his second marriage Duset Weil in Altdorf and had 12 children (in addition to 5 from his first). One of the 12 children was my gg grandfather Isaac also married twice and his second wife was Rosa Bernheim, my gg grandmother. Rosa was a younger sister to Leon Solomon Bernheim. One of Rosa children was my great grandfather Leopold who was in fact first cousin of Isaac Wolf Bernheim. So our genealogies are in fact very intertwined. I know the mother of Fannie Dreifuss was Roset (also known as Regine, Ranle and Ranta) Hirsch. I also have your great grandmother Sarah Weil marrying Samuel K Cohn.

Altdorf and Schmieheim are nearly adjoining communities in the Baden plain between the Black Forest and the Rhine River. In former days they were separated by a horse path used frequently to access the Jewish cemetery serving all the communities part of the Baden plain. I know that Leopold and IW Bernheim know each other as cousins from several accounts. One being that they immigrated to New York within a year of each other; Leopold went back to Europe a few years later to bring Isaac Bernheim younger brother over so he could going into business with him in Louisville.

I might  have some resources for you if you want to find out more. Let me know. But you want to know more about visiting Schmieheim.

I’ve been there twice, July 1999 and recently September 2023. Both trips. Schmieheim for me has been part of a broader trip in the Baden area and for that reason  I have seen very little of the community  outside of the cemetery. The Schmieheim Jewish cemetery is perhaps the largest, oldest, preserved and fully documented cemetery in Southern Germany.  You will be able to find most of your ancestors still there. For that reason and because it is so hauntingly beautiful, it sucks up so much time.

I planned our first trip largely on my own, drawing on contacts I had made over the years of family research. My second trip I planned with the help of Ms Ute Mehlhorn, who runs The German American Connection, She is a native German trip planner, guide, driver, translator, and genealogist. I originally began working with her on a trip planned originally for 2020 but was canceled at the last minute because of the outbreak of COVID. We finally rescheduled it for September 2023 because of an invitation I had to attend a reunion of descendants of the former Jews of Fulda (in Hesse, Germany). On this trip she found local historians, experts, town Mayors, local towns people and more to speak to us, plan site visits and even provide some meals for us. She provided bus transportation (sometimes even drove us), had hotels and stops prepaid and even helped with our luggage. Many of the people who guiding us didn’t speak English and she was there always aa a fluent translator. Her rates were extraordinarily reasonable. I plan to try another trip with her after fully digesting this one

Let’s talk more about it if you have questions.

Best regards,
Pete

Hello Pete,
This is a total shot in the dark and please feel free to ignore this email if it doesn't interest you.
I found your email on a few pages that a friend printed up from jewishgen.org about a trip you took, perhaps in 2012, to Schmieheim, Germany.  I am hoping to make a trip to Schmieheim in the next few years.  I am a descendant of Rabbi Moses Baer Dreyfuss who, with an unknown spouse, had a child named Fannie Dreyfuss in 1826 in Altdorf bei Nürnberg.  She married Leon Solomon Bernheim in 1844 and they had 7 children.  One of these children was Isaac Wolfe Bernheim who eventually made a fortune in the liquor business in Kentucky and returned to Schmieheim in the early 1900 as a philanthropist (installing municipal plumbing and other good deeds for the town).  Fannie's second marriage was to Louis Weil, from which marriage there were another two children including Sara Weil, my great-grandmother, born in 1860 in Schmieheim.
Any chance your gr-gr-gr-grandfather Abraham Dreyfuss had a brother named Moses or that you are related to the Bernheims from Louisville?
Any comments or recommendations on my planned trip to Schmieheim are welcome!

Best Regards,
Sara (named after my great-grandmother) Nugent

Dear Mr. Dreyfuss,

maybe I can give you some useful information about a branch of the
Dreyfuss family. I was on research for the familiy of Edwin Welte's wife
Betti Dreyfuss, they married in 1897. The marriage was divorced approx.
1936 and Betti went to the US, beeing a US-citizen since birth.

The family data known to me (from the inheritance files 1896) are as
shown below:

Dreyfuss, Samuel born ca. 8. June 1832, died 18. September 1896 in
Freiburg im Breisgau, (64 years, 3 month, 10 days old). US-citizen.

His wife Fanny, born Goldschmidt, died earlier (only cited that she was
born in Altdorf)

Children (all were US-citizen):

Rosalia Dreyfuss, b. 28.5.1862 Altdorf, 1896 in America and at this
time already married to Bernard Bernheim (Bernheim Bros.)

Bernhard Dreyfuss, Merchant in America, b. 23.02.1865 in Freiburg i
Br., name later americanized to Barney (the one from the Pittsburgh
Pirates)
and mostly put wrongly to Freiberg/Saxony. Later member of the board of
Welte & Sons Inc. of Ney York.

Frieda Dreyfuss, b. Altdorf, died 6.Feb.1892, not married, 28 years and
7 months.

Betti Dreyfuss, b. 20.3.1873 Freiburg i. Br., married 1897 to Edwin
Welte, divorced ca. 1936, emigrated 1936 to the US.

Kind regards

Dear Pete,

I found your website as the result of a websearch regarding "Isaac Wolf Bernheim" and would be interested in getting a password. Kudos for the great deal of effort that has obviously gone into preparing and maintaining the website.

On my mother's side of my family I am descended from Amelia Bernheim and Julian Sickles Rauh (my grandmother, Jane Oettinger [ne Rauh], was one of the two daughters of this couple, and my mother, June Starr [ne Oettinger] was the daughter of Jane Rauh). It is my understanding that Amelia Bernheim was one I.W. Bernheim's children.

Any information I obtain from your site would not be shared outside of my immediate family. Among other things, I would be particularly interested in information tracing I.W. Bernheim's family tree going back prior to the city of Bern, Switzerland.

Please feel free to call me if you would like additional information or have any questions.

time my grandmother (who's first name is unknown) thus remarried to Mr.
Joseph Kozel of J. Kozel & Son's Steel of Rochester, NY.

Melvin was my father;if I remember right he had no middle name!

He had three kids naturally and adopted one from his marriage... They
are:

Steven, Scott, Sandra, and Eric

Sydell Schlesinger my Aunt married Mr. Marvin Morris... they had two
kids
who were:

Susan and Debbie

Melvin Schlesinger passed away... in 1976 if I remember correctly!
Rita Schlesinger passed away... in 2000 if I remember correctly!
Marvin Morris passed away... est. in 2000.

My brother Scott if I remember right had started a genealogy on the
Schlesinger Family... but don't hold me to it!

God Bless,
Steve
