Dear Pete,
Though I am living in Pretoria, South Africa, I have spent 24 years of my life in Warsaw, Poland.
In Polish language there is a letter "a" with a small coma at "a" (looks like you would join a, together). For many people this may look like g, unless they know of this uncommon letter of the Polish alphabet.
Should this be the case with your question it would be rather Powazki
pronounced something like povounski. This is a big suburb in Warsaw where there is the oldest catholic graveyard. Next to it is a biggest Jewish graveyard probably in the whole Europe. I know for sure that many Jews used
to live in vicinity. During 2nd WW the Jewish cemetery was just next to Warsaw ghetto.
I do not know if it helps you a bit with your question, but this may be one of possibilities.
Than
Peter

65. Birth and death dates are from Social Security Death Index of a Regina Garfunkel. The information that she died in her fifties (from Sid I think) is inconsistent.
The 1930 census records have her to be 21 years old, which would have her birthday to be ca 1909
66. On Sept 6, 2000 I found the ship manifest. The children came over on the SS Prinz Friedrich Wilhelm, which left Bremen on Nov 1 and arrived in the port of NY on November 11, 1913 (each page of the manifest for that ship lists Nov 11, but the tape header of that volumn said Nov 12, 1913).
Passengers were:
Frimet (Fanny) age 17; Feige (Frieda) age 11; Brucha (Bertha) age 9; Chancis (Ann) age 2. They were listed of Austrian Nationality and last permanent residence was Mielec Galicia. The name of nearest relative their homeland was Wolf, Naft., Mielec. Final destination was NY,NY with passage paid for by their father. They were to join father, Garfinkel B. 38 Ave D, New York. Fanny was 4ft 11in, Bertha and Frieda were 4 Ft even and no height list for Ann. they had black hair and brown eyes and the place of birth for all 4 was Mielec, Galicia.
Bertha’s SSDI records indicates she was actualy born 7 Jun 1903 and Barton says he has her birth certificate inicating she was born in Litowisk.Fanny’s grave gives her dates as born Jan 10, 1898 and died June 11, 1957
67. “1930 Federal Census,” E 102 St Manhatten NY, 1930, 8 Jan 2005.

71. New York City Groom and Bride Index Garfinkel Jannie to Harry Sadt May 9 1921 Certificate # 12197 (1921) Manhattan groom FHL Roll # 1653134
I sent away and obtained the record. Data is May 9 (or possibly 19) 1921 between Harry Sadt of 148 Ace C and Fannie Garfinkel 123 Ave. C (they lived on the same street). His occupation was “Mfgr” and was born in “Lodge” Ruussia ). This must be Lodz. His mother’s maiden name was Rifka Bornstein. His father’s name was Fishel. They were married at the Keshenov Cong. of ?
Fannie father was Benny and mother was Rossie Ehrlich- the first marriage for both.
72. “1930 US Federal Census,” Kings Co (Brooklyn) New York, April 14, 1930.
They lived on Van Buren Street in Brooklyn:
William Age 27 (25 when married) Immigrated 1921 A furniture Salesman
Freda Age 27 (25 when married) immigrated 1922
Harold age 4/12
By Willie and Frieda listed their births and those of their parents as being in Poland
73. “Affadavit for License to Marry and Marriage Certificate,” Dec 15, 1928, Manhatten, 30770, City of New York, Department of Records and Information.
I obtained these marriage records of ‘Willie Schwartz’ and Frieda Garfinkel. He was a Furier born in Galicia, Austria whose mother was Sylvia Bessen and father was Sam.. There was no indication is they ever came to the US. His residence was 441 E Houston
Frieda’s occupation was Millinerary and she was born in Galicia, Austria. Her parents were Benjamin and Rose Erlich. She lived at 123 Ave C.
74. Although this could be wrong, his son, Eli- said Joseph was 96 years old at his death. 1910-96=1814
However, more reliable indicators of his birth date are from the birth certificate of his daughter (Ester), which said he was 44 (in 1888) and from reference 464 which has him36 years old at his second wedding in Dec 1874.
75. Vol 5 No 1 of LANDSMEN gives Yussel’s first wife as Sora Wstega and marriage info. It says as far as towns related to him are Opechowo, Ostroleka and Lomza. This is in marriage records Act 40 of 1862.
Also REIP(Russian Era Indexing of Poland Project) lists marriage of Joszk Sznejder to Soro Wstenga in 1862 in Ostrolenka (Openchowo). AkT 40
JRI-Poland lists Ick Bendet Sznejder born 1877 (Akt 80) whose father was Juszk Herszkowicz of Ostrolenka.
76. See March 5 1999 letter from M Tobias. Relevant portion is extracted below(see also reference 137).
________________
As for the SZNAJDER's....
No firm connections yet I'm afraid.
Pete's great-grandfather Joszk did indeed marry his second wife Itka LEWITA in Lomza 1874. Her mother was Zelda DABEK (pronounced DOMBEK) so that is another family to trace Pete. Zelda's father was Gimpel and Gimpel's father was Lejb. The family came from Piontnica, less than a mile from Lomza.
Joszk SZNAJDER's parents were Herszk son of Wolf, and Szejna daughter of Szymek/Lejba and Badasza. Szejna died in Lomza in 1875 aged 60.
Pete's g-g-g-grandfather Wolf SZNAJDER would have been born in the late 18th century. This is about the same time that Arthur's g-g-g-grandfather Wolf SZNAJDER was born...... Could they be the same person?
This again assumes we have the correct family for Arthur. The Wolf junior I have found in Lomza in 1886 was the son of Abram-Ick who was the son of Judka (died Nowogrod 1876 aged 54) who was the son of Wolf.
_________
He later wrote:
Pete,
Sora WSTENGA/SZNAJDER died in 1874 #96. She was 38.
I know of 3 kids of Joszk and Sora:
Guta born 1865, died 1866
Lejba born ~1865, died 1873
Wolf born ~1866 died 1873
Looks like none of their kids survived.
Joszk remarried Itka LEWITA in 1874. She was born 1854 #3.
They had kids:
Enoch 1871 #165
Ick (Bendet) 1877 #80
Szlomo 1884 #411
Chaim 1884 #412
Itka LEWITA's parents were Ick BENDET and Zelda (nee DABEK). Now you
know who your grandfather was named after! Ick Bendet's father was
Szlomo.
And that is about it!
Let me know if you want any record copies (of these records I have
access to, or others from Poland) ........

Yes, he must be - sorry I put Enoch under the wrong family - he was indeed the son of Joszk and Sora.
>Is Ick the same name as the Jdzk provided earlier. How are they pronounced ?
Yes, Ick and Idzk and Jdzk are all variant forms of Isaac. Ick is pronounced Itsik or similar....

>>
>>Let me know if you want any record copies (of these records I have >>access to, or others from Poland) ........
>Yes - are they copies of the original Polish records? How much would each >cost?
For the records I have on film here I would charge $2 each to cover copying/postage/travel etc. For records from Poland the costs are $10 each which includes an extract in English. Copies from Poland are available until 1895 and beyond that date only extracts area available ($5 each). If you prefer you can order extracts-only for pre 1896 too.
For some towns we can even get copies beyond 1895, but not for Lomza.
Let me know what you want. Please remember the copies from Poland are from a confidential source - please understand you must be very careful how you refer to this.

Joni Miller was predicted to be 2nd cousin by 23andm.com. She is actual second cousin. She (jonimiller@live.com) wrote a brief message: “Hello,
Yes my Mom is Renae Schneider. My grandfather was Alex Schneider.”
On 31 Jan 2017, she wrote,
Hi Cousin Pete,
“Thank you so much for the picture of my grandfather. I shared it with my mom and sister, as well.
I was told that my grandfather was the youngest of 26 children. When we moved to Tarzana my grandfather met one of his nephews Joe at the local deli that we frequented, by chance. I don't remember any other Schneiders.
So to fill you in on the family tree:
My Poppy (everyone that knew Alex called him that) married my grandmother, Freida Straussberg. They had two children Perry & Renae. (I believe Perry is deceased.)
My Mom married Kenny Gould and had my older sister Nicki and myself. When I was 4 1/2 (I am 53 now) we moved to Tarzana, CA (Los Angeles), my grandparents came shortly after.
I live in Oak Park, CA and am married to Howard Miller and we have two children: Samantha, 32 and Alex, 29. Sam is married and lives in DC. Alex and his fiance live in Newport Beach. Waiting, not that patiently for grandchildren. My mom and sister live in Palm Desert, CA.
Looking forward to keeping in touch.
Sincerely,
Joni

On 24 May 2020 in series of emails with Joni, her mother (Renae) and sister I learned that although Alex and Frieda were divorced they remarried. I also learned that the child (Joseph) born in 1932 was Perry Joseph Schneider. Renae or Joni supplied birthday of 17 Apr 1931, 1 year before the date in the Petition for Naturalization in source reference 1151.
So the marriage sequence I derived from the information at hand was that they were first married 21 Jul 1931, divorced on a date before 24 Sep 1935, and then remarried 5 Jan 1937.

98. REIPP (JRIP) lists the birth of a Estera Rywka Sznajder to father Joszk in 1888 akt 360.
In Dec 2004 I received the brth certifciate for her and had the Russian script translated via View Mate.
“birth of Estera Rywka SZNAJDER of Lomza daughter of Joszk Gerszkowicz age 44 and Ita Ickowna Bendetowna LEWIT age 36 , June 30, 1888”- from D Price (dprice@sympatico.ca)
... and from MBRichman@aol.com....
“I'm not that proficient at reading Russian, but here is what I could make out (using Polish spellings - so, for example, "sz" = "sh"):
Father - Joszk Gerszkowicz Sznajder, age 44
Mother - Itka Ickowna Bendetowna Lewita, age 36
(i.e., Itka, daughter of Itzk Bendet Levita)
Child - Estra Rywka, born in Lomza 4/16 November 1888“
Dear Pete,
The two dates refer to the Julian/Gregorian calendar dates. Poland, being a Catholic country, had originally used the Gregorian calendar since it was created in the 1500s. After Russia took over Poland, they forced them to revert back to the Julian calendar (the calendar of the Orthodox Church).
The problem with the Julian calendar was that it was falling behind the actual rotation, and Easter (the new moon) kept being delayed. The fundamental difference between the J & G calendar is that the years 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100 are not leap years (because they are divisible by 400, and that became a rule not to make them leap years). But since they are divisible by 4, the Julian calendar still makes them a leap year.
So, in the 1800's, the Julian calendar was off by 12 days. By 1900, it was off by 13 days. By 2100, it'll be off by 14 days. You see the pattern.
And as for Moel, I wish I could tell you. My guess is that it is his last name, but not understanding the words around his name poses a problem figuring out who he is. But you could be right... I've just never heard of a Moel at a girl's naming.
And yes, a very pleasant and happy new year to you!
All the best,
Larry Brikman

Dear Larry,
Many thanks again. I know reading a 100+ year old document even in English is hard for me so in Cyrillic script it must be near impossible. You're right, David Price was the first translator.
BTW, what do you think it means when it says, " 4/16 of November" and "1/13 of June" - or does the dash (/) mean that the writing is unclear- either the first of the thirteenth? Also do you know why are there two dates? Could the second date be the naming?? Could 'Moel' have been this Haim's title??
Many thanks again. Wishing you a peaceful, safe and happy new year.

Dear Pete,
Sorry for the delay, I haven't been home much lately.
Of course I'd love to help.
This one was a lot trickier than the last, the handwriting was a lot more squashed. It's a good thing that you sent me the other two translations, so that I could root myself.
Unfortunately, I couldn't go into much depth with it this time because of the handwriting, but I can definitely confirm things for you.
This is how it reads so far:
Line 1: … in the city of Lomza 1st/13th of June
Line 2: 1888 at 10 o’clock a.m. ...
Line 3:
Line 4: Abram Wolf Meirewicz Brzhenskij [?]: Josek Ger-
Line 5: shkowicz Shnajder 44 years old...
Line 6:
Line 7:
Line 8: Haim Leyb Moel...
Line 9:
Line 10: in the city of Lomza, 4/16 of November
Line 11: … year at 9 o’clock in the morning
Line 12: Itke Ickowna Bendetowna nee Lewita
Line 13: 36 years old...
Line 14: … Estra Rywka ...
Line 15:
Line 16: ... Abram Wolf Meirewicz Brzhenskij [?]
Signature at the bottom in English: Haim Leyb Moel
Talk to the 1st translator, he/she obivously knew what they were talking about.
As for the dates, I can't figure out which date refers to what. Maybe you can show my deciphering and ask the translator what words precedes or come after the dates.
And for Lewita, you are correct. The surname is Lewit, but for females it would be Lewita, since in Russian there was never a Mr. or Mrs. title (until recently when it was created). So the father's name would be Izke Bendet Lewit.
I wish I could have given you more, but I'm limited with the handwriting. By any chance, was one of your translators David Price from Toronto? I know him personally and he's always been good with Cyrillic handwritting.
In the meantime, I'll speak to you next year. Have a safe and happy new year.
All the best,
Larry Brikman

Subject: View Mate Question
Dear Larry,
Again I want to thank you very much for the information on my Wasserman Marriage record from Zwolen. But I wonder if you could glance at one more posting I added to View Mate? You can go directly to it at:
http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5271
I have two conflicting responses and no one offered the depth of information you had earlier on the Zwolen marriage certificate:
Here are the two responses:
(1)
Father - Joszk Gerszkowicz Sznajder, age 44
Mother - Itka Ickowna Bendetowna Lewita, age 36
(i.e., Itka, daughter of Itzk Bendet Levita)
Child - Estra Rywka, born in Lomza 4/16 November 1888
and (2)
birth of Estera Rywka SZNAJDER of Lomza daughter of Joszk Gerszkowicz age 44 and Ita Ickowna Bendetowna LEWIT age 36 , June 30, 1888
There seems to be some confusion in the two responses as to the date(s). Any ideas?
Is there anything more in the document than that?
I have seen the name of her mother before as Lewita? Is there any significance to the 'a' at the end or is this grammar? In other words, Is this the same as Lewit (Levit)?
If the document is gone I can attach an image to an email.
Whatever you can help with I'd appreciate.
Thanks again,
Pete Dreifuss

I don't remember if they are busy the next weekend or not-Sept 23 and 24. Ivan and I will have a soccer game sometime on Saturday the 23rd and have theater tickets at 7Pm on sunday. Let me know how those dates look to you. Also, I can not find what I did with the address for your web site-can you send it to me again? I have some more information for you-some things to add/fix on the document you sent to harriet and to Ira (I'm not sure if this was from your web site or from a Pc document) It is a numbered list of family members from the Schneider family beginning with Wolf Sznejder as First generatin, Number 1.
