This list was provided to me (PAD) in September 2023 by Horst Kemple. Among all the data in it, the first entry shows that Regina Adler was different than Regina Stern and that she was the first wife of Josef and information on all three wives and their children together.

452. This evidence is supported by the data within the wedding certificate of Fanny Hess (the 1st cousin of Karolina who immigrated to NY with her) and her husband Leo Strauss. Specifically within the cetificate were that Fanny’s parents were Josej Hess and Regina Stern. The only way Fanny could be first cousins with Karolina and having the surname Hess is that her father Josej was brother to Benedict.

Originally the first wife of of Josef Hess, the brother of my great grandfather and namesake, Benedict
Hess, was thought to be Regine Adler before he married Regine Stern. The source of this information was the Gatermann Index (see souce # 976) which said, “Joseph Hess from Hintersteinau, cattletrader (Viehhaendler) 27 years (old) and Regine Stern from Wiesenfeld, 25 years.
(Joseph was the) Widower of Regine, nee Adler

Then I came across the name Sara (Sarchen) Rothschild as another wife and possible mother of some os Josef’s children when I visited the Archives in Fulda on Sept 7, 2023 source reference #1592. I had also seen her name in some family trees online, so I entered her name in the database as yet a third wife of Josef.

458. Text from an unknown publication provided by Horst Kempel, Historian of Hintersteinau to me on Sept 6, 2023.

Hintersteinau, Wilhelm Bode Str. 2

Last year our village lost another of its traditional facilities. For
reasons of age, our “Schneiderschorsche Käthe” closed her small
grocery store on April 30, 2018. The store not only offered on-
site shopping opportunities for the most important household
items, it was also a meeting place and information exchange,
especially for our older residents. This linden leaf would therefore
like to take a look at the past of the house and its residents.

The building stands in a prominent place in the lower village at the intersection
of three main streets and the square with the old linden tree, which no
longer exists. For this reason, it may have been given the number 1 when
the first house numbers were assigned around 1800, and when it was reassigned
in 1863 it was given the house number. 38. The current address
is Wilhelm-Bode-Straße 2.

The former residents can be traced back to the beginning of the
19th century. However, a house at this location probably existed long
before that.
First of all there is a Benedikt Hess, who lived around 1800
has become resident here abroad. According to the military log from 1820
He was born around 1770 and, like most Jews, practiced the trade
dealer. After his death in 1831, his wife Sara, née inherited
Baum and the minor children left the property. Around 1850 the
house consisted of two halves, which were occupied by Benedict's
descendants. One half was occupied by the family of his son Salomon
Hess, the other by the family of his son Moses. After the death of
Salomon and his wife Hanna in 1891, their son Samuel took over
the entire house; Moses' family had already moved away from
Hintersteinan.
Föller family around 1914, from left: grandmother Leipold (?), spouse Margarete and Johannes Föller,
Children Georg and Katharina Föller. You can still divide the house into two separate ones
Recognize halves. In the middle there were small stables for goats and small animals.
Schneiderschorsche 2018
.
The right half was acquired around 1895 by the tailor Georg Föller
(December 19, 1871), son of Kaspar Föller from Reinhards. When Samuel Hess died
in 1915, he also came into possession of the other half. The house name
“Schneiderschorsche” goes back to him. In 1896 he married Margarete, née Leipold
from Hintersteinau. The marriage produced the children Johannes (June 5, 1894)
and Katharina (October 15, 1897). Johannes died in World War I on
December 22, 1916 near Verdun.

Yes, it looks like there's a connection.  The Family history I have says that my maternal gg grandmother, Elise born 10 October 1827
was the daughter of Handelsmann (trader?shopkeeper?) Benedikt Hess who died 12 May 1830 and his wife Sara, nee Lamm, born 1784.

Elise was the second wife of my gg grandfather Simon Weisbecker.  They lived in Fischborn where my maternal grandmother was born.

I have not looked at these details very closely before, and may do so in the near future.

Please let me know if you find anything more.

Dear Peter Dreifuss,
I have been researching my mother's Weisbecker family, and am now looking at a family history written in Aachen on Nov 1, 1938. It included my gg grandmother, Elise Hess, who was born in Hintersteinau in 1827, and was married to my gg grandfather (his 2nd wife) in 1855. They lived in Fischborn. My g grandfather was the first of their children.
If any of this sounds like it may be your family, please let me know.

Best Regards,
Edna Berkovits

: With the shapes of the letters in old German script in mind, there is no doubt that the name of the deceased in row 3 is Beila, no guessing necessary here.
There are many web sites on the Internet showing this script, for example:
https://www.familytreemagazine.com/premium/7-websi...ng-old-german-script/

Beila Stern, wife of Joseph Stern, born 14 Dec 1792, died 27 May 1840, buried 29 May 1840
Joseph Stern, born 12 June 1782, died 21 Feb 1841, buried 23 Feb 1841.

As of Oct 21 , 2017 I have not confirmed or found any supporting documents.

The siblings of Hanna Stern showed up on my family tree which I noted on Oct 21, 2017 which I entered under this reference (#891).

Parents: Joseph Stern, broker, and his wife Babette (Diefenbach)

[You can understand the column headings from the information above; column 4 is like column 3 but for illegitimate children]

Note that the birth record is dated 1824 which is the same birth year as Rose. This is suspicious as the birth record does not say anything about twins.

474. Today we attended the funeral of Faye Alberta Thome. I had not seen her children in 30 years. Joel had had a very debelitating stroke a couple of years back. (He is the one who was a composer, consuctor and won a grammy for a tribute he did to Frank Zappa.) He still had his sense of humor and I am sure he has no idea of who Frank and I are since we were never close growing up. From what I understand, Faye was not easy to get along with but it sounds like she made her peace with all of her children before she died. If it had not been for her we would not
have ever gone to AltDorf or Schmiehein so we owe a lot to her memory.

484. “Washington Post Obituary, 2 May 2012.”
Lawrence S. Lewin, 74, a Washington health-care consultant whose firm conducted prominent studies of public policy, died April 29 at his home in Chevy Chase. He had liver cancer.
The death was confirmed by his wife, Marion Ein Lewin.
In 1970, Mr. Lewin helped start what became the Lewin Group and built it into a prominent consulting firm specializing in health-care and energy issues, such as the oil and natural gas industries. It conducted comprehensive and widely cited studies of presidential health-care initiatives as well as studies for hospital associations and other clients.
The Lewin Group was acquired by a succession of firms starting in the late 1980s and was owned by the Quintiles pharmaceuticals company when Mr. Lewin left the organization in 1999. Until his death, he continued to work as a health-care consultant, assisting senior health-care executives, foundations and organizations.
Lawrence Stephen Lewin was a New York City native and a 1959 graduate of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He received a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1964. He served in the Marine Corps from 1959 to 1962.

Early in his career, he was special assistant to Postmaster General Lawrence O’Brien. He then joined a consultancy focused on manpower and antipoverty activities and, in 1969, entered the health-care field as a vice chairman of the secretary of health education and welfare’s task force on Medicaid.
Mr. Lewin served on corporate boards, including Medco Health Solutions and Intermountain Healthcare. He was on the board of regents at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and a member of the congressionally mandated Task Force on the Future of Military Health Care, which filed its report in 2007. His other board memberships included Arena Stage.
Mr. Lewin was elected in 1984 to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, and he served eight years as an elected member of the IOM Council. He received an IOM award for distinguished service.
His first marriage, to Ann White, ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Marion Ein Lewin of Chevy Chase; a son from his first marriage, Daniel Lewin of Washington; two stepsons, Mark Ein of Washington and Jon Ein of Paris; a brother, Edward Lewin of Bethesda; and a grandson.

Dear Peter,
I have some more information for you on the Swedish relatives,
descendants of Elsbeth Hess.
Fredrik Lecerof married Elizabeth Wolpert who was born 14 September
1965. They divorced in March 1998. Fredrik is now married to Susanne
Sundell and they have a son, Emil Elias born 3 August 2004.
David Lecerof is married to Shoshana Wilk. They have a third child,
Simon Max, born 8 October 2005.
Andreas Lecerof is married to Josefine Meyerson, born 18 March 1970.
They have a daughter Mina, born 7 June 2003. Andreas no longer works
for Cap Gemini but I do not know the name of his current employer.
Josefine is an anesthetist (I think).
I do have some photographs and will try to get them scanned in so I
can email them to you.
Thank you again for all the work you do to keep the genealogy site up to
date.
Love, Ann and Fred
